Ster (Sigrun Paschke)



Born:  (Lissabon, Portugal) October 16th 1973.

LANGUAGES:  Fluent in Afrikaans, English and German and knowledge of Dutch and Italian.

EDUCATION: B-mus Performance at the Stellenbosch Conservatoire, University of Stellenbosch.

Sigrun Paschke, pianist, accordionist and composer, has extensive experience as a soloist, accompanist and as a member of different bands and ensembles.  After she completed B-mus Performance at The University of Stellenbosch (piano and organ cum laude) she started teaching piano, guitar, recorder and keyboard.  She also does arrangements and sets poems to music for a variety of artists.

Sigrun also performs at weddings and corporate functions regularly.

She compiled several music theatre productions, mainly consisting of own compositions and performed them at:

  • Centurion Theatre;
  • Dorpstreet Theatre;
  • Oukraal Festival;  and Karoo National Arts Festival etc.

She started a band Soul Fruit, combining the African and Western Music traditions.  They performed their production, “From Mind Routes (Roots) to Soul Fruit”, at various venues.

Furthermore she set poems by Danie Marais to music and the production, “Hoe Sekel die Maan”, was performed at the Woordfees and Versindaba.

She improvised with different poets at the Woordfees during the event, “Nag van Passie”.

As a member of the groups, Duende, Acoustic Shape and Kolo Novo Movie Band she regularly performs at venues and festivals such as:

  • Kirstenbosch;
  • Meerlust wine Estate;
  • Knorhoek wine Estate;
  • the  Woordfees;

  • Earth Dance Festival;  Rock in the Daisies Festival; the Cape Town International North Sea Jazz Festival etc.

During the past few years she’s increasingly been telling her story with solo piano compositions with classical roots, but infused by Jazz and World Music.  She played solo recitals  at the Welgemeend Theatre, Cape Town.  Recently the concert series, “Ster in the Dark” (a combination of Sigrun’s composition and poetry by singer/songwriter Stef Bos from The Netherlands) took place at:

  • The Klein Libertas Theatre;
  • De Malle Meul Theatre;
  • The Bordinghuis Theatre and
  • The Old Mill Theatre.

“Ster in the Dark” will be performed at the Karoo National Arts Festival 2011 where a cd containing some of these compositions will be launched.  Further launches are planned at the Klein Libertas Theatre, Stellenbosch and the Little Theatre, Cape Town – South Africa.

Since 2009 Sigrun has been living and working in Berlin, Germany as a freelance musician during the South African winters.  She recently gave a solo piano recital at the Sendesaal Bremen as part of the concert series:   “Konzertreihe im dunkeln”.
