Concerts in the dark

Ster studied B-Mus at the Stellenbosch Conservatoire and completed her degree in 1997. Since then she’s followed the path of a pianist and composer.
Ster was born blind and has been able to develop a specific kind of keen sight that doesn’t require eyes. During the past few years she’s increasingly been translating these perceptions into compositions with classical roots, but infused by Jazz and World Music.
When poet and singer/songwriter Stef Bos from the Netherlands first heard her compositions he was moved by their musicality and immediately invited her to record them at his studio in the Low Countries. The first CD launch will be held at the Klein Libertas Theatre in Stellenbosch on March 30th.

Stef about Ster:
‘The concept of a series of concerts in the dark originated from the idea of letting the audience experience the music in the same world as the one it was created in. A world that you can see without your eyes. A world where music doesn’t need visual effects, lighting shows or video clips to exist. The concert simply encompasses the core of the music: the balance between silence and sound.

‘I really wanted to direct this concert because I had a unique experience many years ago. I participated in an experiment investigating the sensation of taste, where I was blindfolded and asked to taste different fruits, dishes and ingredients. Never before had my experience of taste sensation been so intense.

‘With these Concerts in the Dark, I think Ster can help the audience experience a similar kind of feeling through her music.

‘During the recording sessions, Ster and I happened upon the inspiration of varying her compositions with short recorded prose readings from me. We’ve now incorporated this aspect into the concert. Sometimes the music is introduced by the prose and sometimes the prose just gives an overview/a summary.’

Ster about Ster:
‘What happens when sound comes and lives in your world…? Some melancholic and distant; others ferocious and immediate. Sounds can make you melt and freeze – tremble and prance simultaneously. Sometimes they clamber and swarm over each other just like the cacophony of conversations in a crowded restaurant. Then they expand and stretch and grow apart, and start bouncing like voices in an empty building.

‘Sometimes they worm their way into your very being, warm and tender like a newborn baby in your arms! Sounds have holes in them that allow them to live. Sometimes these holes become rustling silences that sing stories, and sometimes they dissolve into nothings that bring everything to a standstill. Everywhere you go, these silences speak another language.

‘Sounds can creep up on you and cocoon you in cotton wool. Other times they drill through your buzzing thoughts and startle you out of them. Or they drug and envelop you like a room full of incense and candles – so beautiful they could make you mad. Sounds have so many places for pictures that you can rumple and shake around to your heart’s desire. They allow you to smell, touch or taste absolutely anything you want.’
